BIRDING SITES - Magdalena Valley (DRY, PREMONTANE AND FOOTHILL FOREST)


Valley Magdalena (including: Cerro Quinini, laguna de Pedro Palo, Reserva Mana Dulce, Reserva el Paujil y premonate Forest at la Victoria) This are Important Bird Areas, we highlight the importance of this region as a key area that needs strong conservation strategies to preserve a large proportion of the middle Magdalena Valley avian community over an altitudinal gradient beetween  500 to 1600




Endemic - Crested Ant-tanager (Habia cristata)

Magdalena biogeography birds: This dry inter-Andean valley in western central Colombia is flanked by both the Cordillera Oriental (to the east) and the Cordillera Central (to the west) of the northern Andes. Because of its isolation from similar habitats, a number a endemic species persist.Delineation for this ecoregion did not follow vegetation maps as in other areas, and instead relied exclusively on expert opinion from ecoregion priority setting workshops, and the marked elevational limits to dry forests based on the rain (cloud) shadow effect.

A  four-day trip, or - even better - a  five-day trip, will be enough to fully explore this birds: Blue-billed Curassows,  Antioquia Bristle-Tyrant,  Velvet-fronted Euphonia, Yellow-tufted Dacnis , chestnut-backed Antbirds , Citron-throated Toucan, Sooty Ant-Tanager, White-mantled Barbet, Saffron-headed Parrot, Slaty-winged Foliage-Gleaner, Pacific Antwren, One-colored Becard, Turquoise Dacnis , Speckle-breasted Wren, Thrush-like Schiffornis, Yellow-headed Manakin , striking Blue-crowned and White-bearded Manakins , Colombian Chachalaca ,  Bar-crested Antshrike ,  White-mantled Barbet, Apical Flycatcher, and other tanagers, hummingbirds, woodcreepers a lot lifers for you!
